Porter's 1 Cigar Porter's 1 Cigar, Arizona Territory

Obverse: GOOD FOR ONE CIGAR PORTERS TUCSON A.T.

Reverse: JACOB STRAHLE & CO. BILLIARD MANFRS -515- MARKET ST SAN FRANCISCO, CAL.

ID#: TOKEN01

Country & Date: United States, Arizona Territory, circa 1870-80

Denomination, type, & size: Brass, token for 1 cigar, 29mm

Description: This is an ultra rare R10 token from Arizona Territory. One of only two in existence we know about, in 1990 one went for $900--expect one in excellent condition to go for $1500 today. Unfortunately this specimen has some corrosion--which means you can own it at a greatly discounted price. Here's an opportunity to own perhaps the rarest of all tokens from Arizona!

History: The token was manufactured by Jacob Strahle, a German immigrant who came to San Francisco during the gold rush in the 1850s--his advertising adorns the reverse of the token. In addition to making billiard tables and fine furniture, Jacob Strahle made the railroad tie used to complete the transcontinental rail line--the one the golden spike was driven into at Promontory Summit, Utah on May 10, 1869. Tucson was the capitol of Arizona Territory from 1867-77, and hosted a number of saloons, stores, and a population of several thousand.
