Presented on this page are a wide variety of medicine bottles. Patent medicines were used to cure a wide variety of ailments from the mid 1800's through the early 1900's, before the FDA put a stop to the sale of over-the-counter narcotics. These bottles contained everything from codeine and opium to alcohol--and while they didn't cure you, they often made the pain go away!

Description: This is a fine old pontiled cylindrical medicine bottle with bold embossing. A bit of interior haze, but in excellent condition. In 1795, Dr Isaac Thompson concocted an eye water of zinc sulfate, saffron, camphor, and rose water. It was sold as late as 1939--this bottle dates from the 1840s or 1850s.

Description: This beautiful big patent medicine has striking iridescence on the exterior, and is a striking display bottle, especially as the sun hits it. It does have an interior crack along the lip, but is otherwise in excellent condition. Dr. Miles formed the Miles Medical Co. in 1884; in 1885 his Dr. Miles Restorative Tonic appeared. The tonic was supposed to “excite in a moderate degree the energies of all parts of the body without causing any deviation of healthy functions”. In the 1900's, the company went on to produce and market Alka-Seltzer.
